Date added: Dec 9, 2009 UK Fire Deaths continue to Fall

Finalised official government figures show a continued reduction in the number of primary fires and deaths from fire in the UK in 2007. The total number of deaths from fire was down to 10% to 443, of which 267 were from accidental dwelling fires. Although this continues the long term trend in the reduction of fire deaths, recent quarterly provisional figures have suggested that trend may not continue.

Injuries from fires fell by 4% to 13,200 in 2007 - the eighth consecutive annual fall and lowet number for 13 years. Firefighter casualties fell from 350 to 268. The number of primary fires fell by 10% to stand at 144,000. UK fire and rescue services attended 804,000 fire and false alarm incidents in the year ending 31 December 2007 - an 8% decrease on the previous 12 months.

Attendances to false alarms fell slightly to 419,000 - a drop of 4%. The false alarm figures break down to those counted as malicious (down by 12% to 30,000) and those attributed to apparatus (down 1% to 217,000).
